Tameside

Tameside is one of the 10 local authorities that make up Greater Manchester, nestling between the buzz of Manchester City Centre and the beauty of the Pennines.  Our 9 towns, each with strong individual identities, share a vision of a more prosperous Tameside, with improved life opportunities for our people, higher educational attainment, better paid jobs and the chance to enjoy the fantastic places around us. With a reinvigorated political and executive leadership, we’re now looking to secure a better future for all our people, businesses and communities.

Like all Councils, we, along with our people and businesses, are facing real challenges as the cost-of-living crisis bites. It’s against this backdrop that we need to continue to deliver vital services and key strategic support across the district and the council.  Our new Director of Resources will be critical to this.  They will bring the strategic judgement, the operational depth, the deep financial experience and the character needed to be heard and trusted to lead us through these exceptional times.

The role

The new Director of Resources and section 151 officer will lead finance, IT, exchequer services and performance oversight across the Council – all services at the heart of our modernisation agendas. By leading, persuading, influencing, shaping, overseeing and holding others to account, this role will drive change from the corporate centre, working with all corporate colleagues, across GM and our wider partners.  Success will be visible – budgets will be maintained, risks will be managed, digitalisation will support modernisation and we’ll have a clear understanding of performance.

The Director will be an experienced senior accountant, able to step into the heart of an ambitious Council, leading from the corporate centre whilst working closely with key partners. They’ll bring good political insight, the capacity to drive and lead tough decisions, the conviction to speak truth to power and the willingness to be robust when needed. With an eye always on the strategic picture, they’ll ensure operational delivery and exploit tactical opportunities to make dramatic steps going forward. Ideally, they’ll bring senior leadership and management experience from local government, with exposure to section 151 responsibilities along the way.  However, we’ll be less driven by decades of experience and the scars of past battles, and more focused on finding someone with the talent, capacity, ambition and personality to make a difference in the here and now whilst shaping our long-term success.
