Service Director Strategy and Innovation

Salary: £87k

We know we have a long way to go in Children’s Services.  Our recent Ofsted has reinforced the scale of improvement.  We are determined to improve at pace, for the children, young people and families of Wakefield. Indeed, for the future of the District.

As our new Service Director, you will be central to our progress.  You will lead our transformation programme as we make a radical shift in the quality of the services we provide.  Working closely with our newly appointed Service Director, Children’s Social Care, you join our new leadership team with a key focus on the turnaround in children’s social care.  You’ll have the unwavering support of the Council’s leadership as you shape strategies, systems, relationships and interventions that modernise our provision and achieve dramatic improvements in outcomes. As the council’s lead officer and contact with Ofsted, you’ll generate and maintain positive relationships, building confidence while harnessing the opportunities of collaborative working with all partners.

This is a key Service Director role at Wakefield, providing strategic leadership and development of in-house and commissioned children’s services.  The role combines crucial complimentary components; effective business development and performance management; leading our Children’s Services Transformation Programme; driving innovation whilst also leading our Integrated Early Help, Youth Services (including Youth Offending Service) and Troubled Families services. Reporting to the Corporate Director Children and Young People, this role is responsible for a budget of £13.8m and total staff of 245, directly managing 3 Service Managers.

You’ll bring a deep understanding of children’s services, strengths in supporting service transformation and improvement, a rigorous intellect aligned with a clarity and focus on performance management, and the capacity to drive change, building momentum around a compelling vision for children’s services.

If you’re up for the challenge, driven by the belief in a better future for children and young people, with the leadership skill to make a difference, Wakefield is the place for you.
