Thank you for your interest in joining Leeds City Council in this crucial and influential role. Leeds is the second largest local authority in the country with a population of 180,000 children and young people. One in five of those young people are growing up in poverty and 67% of those children considered as “living in poverty” live in a family where at least one adult is in work. So there are considerable and complex challenges to meet. We are committed to making Leeds a child-friendly city – a place where they feel safe, where they are listened to and where their needs are an essential consideration in how we plan for the future.
Our work in Children and Families has received national attention and praise and has resulted in the council receiving a DfE grant of £9.59m – the largest amount awarded to any of the department’s ‘Partners in practice’ and a reflection of the confidence they have in the city’s restorative approach to working with children and families and also in their work in supporting other local authorities.
You’ll be joining a team that is both talented and committed, and with a solid track record of success – we are seen as an integral part of the region’s children’s provision, with effective partnerships in place and plenty of innovative practice. And our role as a ‘Partner in practice’ means that the ‘high support and high challenge’ culture that we pursue within the council, can be applied to support improvement in other local authorities too.
We’re never complacent: Leeds is a major city, with all the complexity and pressures that accompany our status, and we are dealing with a number of deep-rooted issues. But we are confident that we have the right resources, the right management culture and the right professional relationships in place. Our goal is putting children and young people at the heart of a strong economy, in a compassionate city. If you can bring the right leadership, anything’s within our grasp.
We look forward to receiving your application.
